Question Explain

This question is a multifaceted one which assesses your knowledge of the existing product landscape, your ability to critically analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your preferred products, and your creativity and ability to construct a viable alternative.

When answering the question, use the following steps:

  1. Identify your favorite product: Define the product that you like the most. The product could be anything such as a tech gadget, an app, a service, as long as you have extensive knowledge about it.

  2. Discuss the product's strengths: List out what makes this product your favorite. This can be around its functionality, its user interface, pricing, features etc.

  3. Analyze its weaknesses or areas for improvements: Discuss what you believe could be better in that product. This could be anything from improved features, a smoother user interface, better accessibility, or more.

  4. Design a competitor: Using the areas for improvement, design a theoretical competitor which excels where you believe your product currently lacks to become an improved alternative version.

Answer Example 1

One of my favorite products is Spotify. I love its vast music library, the quality of the audio, and their FYP algorithm which is spot-on for my tastes.

However, Spotify does have a few areas where there could be improvements. For one, the social features are a little lacking. It's not easy to share music with friends who aren't on Spotify, and the process can be smoother. Additionally, Spotify could do a better job with their podcast discovery feature.

So, if I were to design a competitor, let's call it "AudioCore". First, it would have a massive music library and high-quality audio like Spotify, but it would also have an improved social listening feature. This feature will allow users to share playlists and songs seamlessly with friends, regardless of if they are using the AudioCore platform or not. Secondly, the competitor would place a larger emphasis on podcasts by having a dedicated section on the home page for podcast discovery, that uses an algorithm to suggest popular, trending, and recommended podcasts based on user's listening habits and preferences.

Answer Example 2

My favorite product is Airbnb because it provides an affordable and varied hospitality service, I particularly love their user-friendly interface and localized home-stay experience.

However, there are two areas for improvement on this platform. First, the variance in quality of accommodations can be improved. Second, the review system could use tweaking, to be more transparent and fair.

To design a competitor, that we'll name as "TravelHomes". It would incorporate compulsory quality standards and stricter onboarding criteria for the hosts to maintain consistency in the quality of accommodations. Users should have an idea of what to expect regardless of where they are booking their stay. Furthermore, regarding the review system, rather than only allowing reviews after completion of a stay, TravelHomes would allow review updates. For instance, if a user visited the same place after a year and noticed changes (for better or worse), they could update their review accordingly. This change would ensure the review system is more accurate and honest.
