In this question, the interviewer wants to gauge your experience in team environments. They are interested in how you view and describe the cultures of the teams you have been a part of in your previous roles. It’s a means to understand and gauge if you would be a fit for their team, and how you could add or improve upon the team environment. When responding, try to cover the following key points:

  1. Describe the team's size, structure and objective.
  2. Discuss the team's working style and values.
  3. Reflect upon the team's communication and conflict resolution strategies.
  4. Share any methods the team used to foster collaboration and cohesion.
  5. Highlight positive attributes that contributed to success and identify any challenges the team faced and how they were handled.

Answer Example 1

In my most recent role at XYZ Corporation, I worked in a cross-functional team of 10 members. Our team culture was collaborative and innovative. We had a flat team structure which encouraged open communication and ideas from all members regardless of their role. Each one us was dedicated towards our common goal and individual accountability was highly valued. We used agile methodologies to streamline our processes and this created a fast-paced but accommodating work environment. One practice that we followed diligently was to hold weekly debriefing sessions to discuss our learnings, challenges and achievements. This helped us consistently improve and maintain a high level of productivity.

At my previous role in ABC Company, I was a part of a diverse team of 15 professionals. Our culture was characterized by inclusivity and respect for each other’s expertise. We were all unique in our skill-sets, but were bound by a mutual commitment to achieve our objectives. Communication was key in our team, we regularly held open-forums for discussion and used emails and chats for daily conversations to ensure everyone was in loop. Conflict, when arose, was dealt with objectively and presented as a growth point. We also regularly engaged in team building activities to boost morale and foster camaraderie. This strong supportive culture brought out the best in us and resulted in successful project deliveries.
