What things will excite you at work, and what things will put you down?
Question Explain
This question is essentially asking you about what makes you happy and motivated at work and, conversely, what can negatively affect your morale and productivity. The interviewer wants to get a sense of your job satisfaction factors and if they align with the work environment and the job role they are offering. While you answer, make sure you convey that you are enthusiastic about work that aligns with your skillsets, interests, and the prospective job's functions.
Also, when you are discussing the things that put you down, ensure you don't come off as overly negative or petty. Remain professional and keep your focus on things that genuinely hinder productivity and job satisfaction, rather than personal dislikes.
Answer Example 1
I am often coupled with a strong sense of fulfillment and excitement when I am faced with challenges and allowed to take the initiative to solve them. Striving for solutions to complex problems utilizing my skills keeps me on my toes and gives me a strong sense of involvement with the work. Additionally, I appreciate a collaborative atmosphere where I can gain insights from experts and innovative thinkers.
On the other hand, my morale might be affected if the work environment discourages learning and idea-sharing, or if micromanagement becomes an issue. Restricted creativity or room for growth hampers not only my potential but also my level of commitment and fulfillment with the work.
Answer Example 2
What excites me at work is an opportunity to keep learning and improving in what I do. Working on tasks that help me push my boundaries and require me to remain updated with the latest industry trends really motivates me. Additionally, I also appreciate a supportive team and a manager who gives prompt and constructive feedback which helps me to constantly better my performance.
In contrast, an environment wherein team members are not supportive and where there is no clear communication can bring my spirits down. Alongside, any form of biases, favoritism, or politics that can disturb the team harmony are factors that can make the work less enjoyable for me.
