Google just eliminated more than 100 jobs in its cloud division, targeting design and user experience teams. The cuts were confirmed by both CNBC and Business Insider, marking another round of layoffs as the company pours resources into artificial intelligence.
This isn't a one-time thing. It's part of a pattern that's been going on since 2023, and it's not stopping.
What Exactly Happened?

Google cut over 100 design-related positions within its cloud unit this week. The layoffs hit teams focused on "quantitative user experience research" and "platform and service experience." These are the people who use data, surveys, and behavioral research to figure out how users interact with Google's products.
Some cloud design teams lost up to 50% of their staff. Most of the affected employees work in the United States. Google sent the news through internal communications on Monday.
Why did Google Layoff Over 100 Employees?
The answer is simple - AI.
CEO Sundar Pichai has been clear about this. He wants Google to "be more efficient as we scale up so we don't solve everything with headcount."
Google is redirecting money from design and research roles into AI-focused engineering positions. They're competing hard against Microsoft and OpenAI, and that competition requires massive spending on data centers, AI models, and computing infrastructure.
CFO Anat Ashkenazi said in October 2024 that budget cuts would go deeper in 2025 to finance Google's AI race. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian claims the company is already "making billions using AI."
The Buildup to the October Layoffs
This didn't come out of nowhere. Google started major layoffs in January 2023, cutting 12,000 people. Since then, they've been systematically reducing staff across multiple divisions.
Throughout 2025, Google has offered voluntary exit packages to employees in human resources, hardware, search, advertising, marketing, finance, and commerce.
In September 2025, Google cut about 200 employees from its global business unit handling sales and partnerships. They also eliminated more than 200 AI contractors working on projects like Gemini and AI Overviews.
Google has also been cutting management. The company reduced its management layers by more than one-third in 2025, targeting managers overseeing small teams. In December 2024, Pichai confirmed a 10% cut in managerial positions, affecting directors and vice presidents.
Who Got Laid Off?
The people who lost their jobs were design and user experience researchers in Google's cloud division. These weren't entry-level positions. Many held advanced degrees and specialized in understanding how users interact with Google Cloud products.
They worked with statistical analysis to guide design decisions and optimize platform experiences. Their job was to make Google's products better through research and data.
One affected employee on an O-1 visa pointed out they now have only 60 days to find new employment or leave the United States. This adds another layer of stress for international workers.
